Happy Birhtday!

(289):

Dad, it's 3am and it's not my birthday... wherever you are, go home

The phone buzzed and Katrina rolled over in bed with a groan as she reached out to grab it. She swiped the screen and sat up, looking blearily at the text message floating on the screen, the bright backlight nearly blinding her tired eyes.

/Happy Birhftday!!!/

"Ugh...." Katrina grumbled, scowling at the message before tapping out her response quickly.

/Dad, it's 3am and it's not my bday. wherever u are, go HOME!/

She hit 'Send', slapped her cell phone back onto the table beside her bed and snuggled back under her covers. She had classes in only a few hours and wanted to grab some much needed rest before college beat her brains out again.

The phone buzzed once more and Katrina entertained the thought of smashing it under the heel of her shoes, throwing it into a rubbish bin and then chucking that into the university bonfire. Then she rolled back over and picked up the phone to see what her father sent back in reply.

/I brought cake!/

She stared at the screen uncomprehendingly for a second, just long enough to hear a door not far from her bedroom slam open and her roommates all scream first in shock and fear, then in surprise and delight. Katrina pressed the phone to her forehead. Oh god, he was here....

"No, no, no, no!" she chanted as she scrambled out of bed and flung open the door to her room, looking out at the den where her roommates were cheering the arrival of her idiot father, who was standing there with half a cake on a platter, a party hat on his head, and the flushed expression of a drunk who found himself in the wrong place while on the brink of sobering up.

"Dad?!" Katrina exclaimed, hands flying up to her head to clutch at dirty blonde hair held back by a scrunchie, "What the hell are you doing here?!"

"That's your dad?!" one of her roommates pointed out in disbelief, still staring at their late-night visitor, "He doesn't even look that much older than us!"

"I said I brought cake." Gabriel told Katrina, completely ignoring the other girls. He walked over and put the platter into her hands before heading for the communal kitchen, "Where's your wine cabinet?" Katrina watched the Angel of World's Ending rummage around in the icebox before registering his words.

"Dad, I'm underage! And this is a dorm house! No alcohol allowed on premises!" she yelled in annoyance and looked down at the cake he'd basically shoved at her.

HAPPY B
SAMANT

"Did you steal this from the Fentons' party?!" Katrina demanded, "You know Samantha's grandparents are gonna blow a fuse and rage at Uncle Caleb about this!" As if waiting for that cue, her phone buzzed again and she groaned again. "This is why I moved to California," she grumbled as she set the cake down and went to answer the new text, "to get away from the Archives' craziness!"

And of course the text messages were perfectly sober -unlike her father still searching for something to drink in their meager pantry- and full of veiled irritation that Caleb's cake for her penpal Samantha was half-stolen only partway through the party because some guy called Magpie spiked the punch and got her dad to trip out. "Oh my god, what the hell, what the hell." Katrina rambled flatly as she texted back as quickly as she could, "Moms, you're supposed to be keeping Dad grounded! Were you three in on this too?!"

She sent the message just as she hear the simultaneous outbreak of a familiar thud and her roommates screaming in horror and panic. "Oh my god... DAD!" Katrina yelled in outrage as she stormed back out of her room, "Did you just murder one of my roommates?!"

"She was coming right at me!" Gabriel protested, pointing one of his blades at the body of an equally blonde young woman dressed in pink pajamas with most of the top buttons undone. The fabric and the effect of the attempted seduction technique were both marred by the large amounts of blood both on the girl and pooling beneath her. A large gash in her chest ruined the lacy bra she was wearing. The other girls were huddling together as far from Katrina and Gabriel as possible, frantically trying to call 911 on their cell phones.

"She's a stupid loaded bimbo who wakes up just long enough to try and have sex with anyone that has a Y chromosome before going back to bed!" Katrina snapped back, fists on her hips as she scowled up at him, nose scrunched in irritation, "Or at least LOOKS like they have one! You bring her back right now before the rest of the sorority calls the cops on you!"

"Ugh, fine. But I'm gonna need a drink after this, Kitten. Stupid lil bugger ruined my mood." Gabriel sighed and shook the blood off his blade before crossing it with the other over himself, "Bring back this soul from purgatory! Resurrection!"

Katrina glared at the light-formed wings created by the spell as they bloomed over her roommate's body and rained feathers gently down on her. The girl gasped and then started coughing, rolling over to spit out the blood still in her throat as the fatal wound closed and healed over, leaving only a thin scar in its place. She whimpered and burbled gibberish as she sat up and looked down at herself covered in blood, the other girls screaming again at the sight of her return to life.

"Y-you... you stabbed me!" the woman finally managed to choke out in shock.

"Only once. Walk it off." Gabriel grumbled and Katrina elbowed him in the same moment he adjusted his body to not only take the hit but keep the contact between her bones and his android body softened, adding on a wincing expression for her sake. The result was what Katrina wanted; a semblance of 'punishing' her father without breaking her arm... again.

"Oh my god... did I... was I dead?!" the woman cried in disbelief and panic.

"Your body didn't even cool off. Quit nagging and walk it off already." Gabriel sniped and Katrina elbowed him again, "Oi! She started it!"

Katrina loved her father, she really did. But the novelty of having a reformed killer angelic android soldier with magic and technology all rolled up in one for a father had worn off around the time she was twelve years old and realized she didn't even bat an eye at the old SAW and Scream horror movies because she grew up around more gruesome ways the human body could be wrenched apart. If her health instructor only knew that she could identify all the bones and muscles and organs in the human body because she saw them spill out over and over because some idiot tried to screw over her mothers while her dad was in range of hearing....

"God, I hate Mondays." Katrina sighed, rubbing her temples carefully, "Dad, please go home. My birthday is next month; you confused me with Nirvana again. You always do that when you're drunk."

"Oh," Gabriel said, unfazed. He lingered there for a while, seeming to think things over before shrugging and bending a little to press a fatherly kiss to her temple, "Enjoy the cake, Kitten. I'll see you on your actual birthday." He smiled at her and Katrina was reminded again why her mothers loved him so much. "Good luck on your classes."

"Love you, too, Dad." she sighed with a fond shake of her head and held up a hand to shield her eyes as Gabriel teleported away in a burst of light and clap of displaced air. Then she looked down at the blood-covered floor and equally blood-covered traumatized girl before sighing again, this time in exasperation. "I'm gonna have to call Uncle Caleb to deal with this again." she groaned, not looking forward to that particular kind of talk, "God, I really hate Mondays."
Because it just came to mind and of course Gabriel would have daughters first. How long did it take you to realize who Katrina was? Who do you think her birth mother is?

I've started writing my book, since it's still slow going with the fics. A little bit at a time, I'm getting there.

Moral of the story for Katrina: No matter how far you are from the Archives, as long as you're part of Gabriel's family, you can always expect something crazy to happen.
